Matt Dowling is an entrepreneur, campaigner, speaker, activist, writer and
consultant who has featured on radio, podcasts, in print and online publications
discussing a range of entrepreneurial topics, fighting for the rights of the self-employed and
addressing issues faced by freelancers.
Founder of Freelancer Club, a community platform inspired by Matt’s personal experience with
an £11,000 unpaid invoice that made national press, the Club provides freelancers with
essential resources to develop business and professional skills, build confidence and form
connections using cutting-edge technology.
Prior to founding Freelancer Club, Matt was an international photographer for over 10 years and
co-founded Top International Magazine, an editorial fashion publication distributed in Los
Angeles and New York, before launching Shooting Beauty, a production company, Green Leaf
Digital, a carbon neutral digital media agency, Freelance Academy, an online educational
platform, and & Then Some, an ethical influencer agency.
Over the past 8 years, the Club has assisted in the development of over 49,000 freelancers and
entrepreneurs whilst facilitating over 200,000 paid jobs. They run a variety of campaigns
including #NOFREEWORK, fighting against the exploitative pracice of unpaid wihin the
freelance sector and Ethical Hiring, a campaign raising awareness around fair payment,
diversity and inclusion.
Matt has gained national exposure in The Guardian, The Times, FT, The Independent and
numerous other publications. His published work has been featured in the likes of The
Huffington Post and City AM whilst he has appeared across BBC radio, RTE and LBC. He has
represented creative freelancers at exclusive round-table discussions with influential
change-makers from Harvard, UAL, NASA and Equity and continues to work with
thought-leaders and politicians to change legislation in Parliament.
Regarded as one the of the leading voices in the creative freelance sector, Matt is regularly
quoted on freelance and entrepreneurial topics.
Matt has delivered talks and sat on panels discussing entrepreneurialism, freelancing and the
future of work at a range of prestigious events and institutions including Financial Times Next
Gen, the TNW conference, the IEEC conference, Central St Martins, LSE, and many others.
He sits on Advisory Boards for freelance-focused companies, consults a range of startups and
has accumulated over 3,000 hours of mentoring.
